Sept. 24, 2004
Winston-Salem, NC - The Winston-Salem State University women's volleyball team had hoped to cruise through the first round of the 2004 Lady Rams' Invitational volleyball tournament undefeated en route to the number one seed heading into Saturday's championship round. However, it was not meant to be as Paine College dashed the Lady Rams' hopes handing WSSU a 3-1 loss in the WSSU's second and final match of the opening round of play.
WSSU and Paine battled closely in the first game, and the Lady Lions snuck out the two point victory 30-28 to grab momentum from the host-team Lady Rams.
Capitalizing on that momentum, Paine won the second game to go up 2-0 and build what would prove to be an insurmountable lead.
However, to WSSU's credit, the Lady Rams earned the third-game victory before ultimately falling 3-1 (28-30, 21-30, 30-23, 17-30).
With the loss, the Lady Rams fall to 6-11 overall (5-4 CIAA) and are relegated to the third seed for Saturday's second round of play. Paine, by virtue of a tie-breaker (games for/games against) captures the second seed heading into Saturday.
Second-round action begins at 9:00 am on Saturday morning.
