Augusta, GA - The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams' volleyball team left the friendly confines of Winston-Salem, NC a day early to be well rested for the first day of competition in the 2004 Paine College Volleyball Invitational Tournament and the rest paid off as the Lady Rams crushed their first round opponent, Benedict College by the score of 3-1 on Friday afternoon.
The Lady Rams, who seem to be peaking at the opportune time this season, won the first game 30-28, fell in the second game 26-30 and then reeled off two straight wins to earn the victory in the match 3-1.
WSSU was the beneficiary of an offensive outburst from several newcomers including Kerri Sparrow and Cherena Douglass. The Lady Rams used solid offense combined with an aggressive defense to earn a 30-16 win in the third game and a 30-27 win in the final game of the match.
With the win, the Lady Rams improve to 8-13 overall (6-5 CIAA) and move on to face the host team, Paine College Tigers at 5:45 pm.
