HIGH POINT, NC - The road was unkind to the Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams (4-30) as the team took a tough three-set loss to the local rival High Point Panthers (15-14, 4-8 Big South), Tuesday evening. Though the Lady Rams fought hard for the entire match, the team fell short in the match, falling to the Panthers 25-8, 25-11, and 25-12.
The Lady Rams had a solid defensive effort in the loss, with 30 total digs. However, the team managed just 16 kills with 20 attack errors in the loss for a -0.053 attack percentage in the match. Also plaguing the Lady Rams in the loss was the team's 11 receiving errors in the match.
Things got off to a rough start for the Lady Rams who fell behind 3-11 early in the first set. Later in the set, High Point ran off eight unanswered points to the Lady Rams that put the team into a 5-15 deficit. The team would manage just three more points in the set to close out the 8-25 WSSU loss. The Lady Rams came out with a better effort in the second set holding the Panthers close, 2-3 in the early going, but another strong run by the Panthers would leave the Lady Rams trailing once again. This time, the Lady Rams fell victim to a 12-2 run by the Panthers that left the team trailing, 4-15. Though the Lady Rams would continue to fight, they would end the set on the wrong side of the 25-11 score. The Lady Rams tried to rally late in the third set after falling into a 7-23 deficit. The Lady Rams began their rally effort with five unanswered points, but a High Point kill and a WSSU setting error would end the match.
WSSU junior hitter Ashley Harris led the way for the Lady Rams with six kills and just two attack errors. She also added a pair of digs in the match. Senior middle blocker Georgette Allen added four kills.
The Lady Rams will take on another local rival in their next effort, taking on the North Carolina A&T Lady Aggies in a Friday evening match at the Corbett Sports Center in Greensboro, N.C.
