Durham, NC - The opening round of the 2004 CIAA Women's Volleyball Championship did not go according to plan for the Lady Rams of Winston-Salem State University on Friday morning as they were handed a 3-0 (30-20, 30-21, 30-20) defeat by the #2 seeded (East Division) Lady Trojans of Virginia State University.
The Lady Rams, who were seeded as the #3 seed in the Western Division, dropped the first game 30-20 and fell behind early. Despite a valiant effort in the second and third games WSSU could not mount a real threat to Virginia State and was swept in the final two games of the match 30-21 and 30-20.
Leading the way in a losing effort for the Lady Rams was Kyra Pridgen who recorded 12 kills in the contest. VSU was led by Andra Colbert with 11 kills.
WSSU will stay alive in pool play and advance to play the #1 seeded (Western Division) Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University at 2:00 pm.
