WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Fans will be in for a different sight, Tuesday evening when the Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (4-24) host the Elon Phoenix (17-4). The match will be the inaugural "Pink Out" match for the Lady Rams, who will host the event in coordination with the American Volleyball Coaches' Association's "The Power of Pink" initiative.
Tuesday's match will be the first "Pink Out" match for the Lady Rams who will join hundreds of teams around the country in an effort to raise breast cancer awareness this month. The event will feature t-shirt giveaways, door prizes, face-painting, and pink pom-poms and ribbons for fans, coaches, and the Winston-Salem State University Student-Athletes Advisory Committee (SAAC). Fans will also have an opportunity do their part as the Susan G. Komen Triad Affiliate will be in attendance to collect donations for cancer research as well.
Fans will see a thrilling match as the Lady Rams will look to end some recent struggles after taking losses in their last three matches, including a pair of road losses at Florida A&M and at South Carolina State. The Lady Rams will look to improve their offensive output after notching sub-.100 hitting percentages in all three matches and a negative hitting percentage (-.054) in their last home match. The team will look to the strength of home court to power Tuesday's effort. WSSU sophomore opposite Jasmine Frazier will be one of many Lady Rams looking to put an end to the team's recent struggles. Frazier is currently the team's fourth leading scorer, but has been solid on defense as well with a team-high 24 solo blocks and 53 total blocks.
Across the net, the Lady Rams will face one of their biggest challenges of the season when they take on an Elon team that is currently ranked 101st in NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball RPI, the highest ranked team that the Lady Rams have faced this season. The Lady Rams will need to step up their defensive efforts as five Phoenix players have recorded at least 100 kills this season with Traci Stewart's 203 kills leading the way.
