Lady Ram Volleyball Places Two On All-Conference Teams

Hampton, VA - The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association announced the 2004 selections for the All-CIAA Volleyball Team, All-CIAA Rookie Team and CIAA Players of the Year on Tuesday afternoon and two Winston-Salem State University Volleyball Players have garnered the honor. WSSU's Chasity Clark was named to the All-CIAA Second-Team while her teammate, freshman Cherena Douglass, was named to the All-CIAA Second-Team as well as being named to the All-Rookie team.

Michaela Vanakova of Virginia Union University, a 5-10, Outside Hitter and Sophomore Marketing major from Olomouc, Czech Republic was chosen as the 2004 CIAA Volleyball Player of the Year. Vanakova leads the CIAA with 5 kills per game, and ranks 7th and 18th in the nation for aces and kills per game respectively. Vanakova aided the Lady Panthers to their 2004 CIAA Eastern Division Title.

Virginia State University's, Outside Hitter, Crystal Hickman has been selected as the 2004 CIAA Rookie of the Year. This Biology major from Winston-Salem, NC has amassed 160 kills, 41 aces and 28 blocks this season, to assist her team into a second place finish in the CIAA Eastern Division.

Clark, a senior from Winston-Salem, NC has been both the offensive and emotional leader for the Lady Rams' volleyball team for the last two seasons. This marks the fourth consecutive time that she has been awarded All-CIAA honors. She was named to the All-Rookie team her freshman season at WSSU, was named to the All-CIAA First-Team the past two seasons and was named to the second team this season. Her second-team selection is a remarkable one as she missed several games in 2004 due to injury.

Douglass, a two-sports star at WSSU who will also play basketball, proved that she could play both sports at the college level as she helped to lead the Lady Rams offense, tallying 237 kills in 2004. For her efforts, she was named to both the CIAA All-Rookie Team and the All-CIAA Second-Team.

Borh the 2004 All-CIAA Teams and All-CIAA Rookie teams are selected by the CIAA Volleyball Coaches Association and will be honored at the Volleyball Championship Luncheon at the Radisson, Research Triangle Park on Thursday, November 4, 2004 at 11:30am.
