PETERSBURG, VA – The Winston-Salem State Rams men's and women's cross country teams returned to action, Friday evening when the team took part in the Virginia State Fall Opener on the campus of Virginia State University. WSSU freshman Ojai Brooks led a strong effort by the Rams, leading the women's team to a first place finish at the meet while the Rams men's team placed eighth.
Brooks led the Rams' women's team to a first place finish at the meet as the team totaled 46 points for the top spot at the meet; edging out Fayetteville State's 47 points. She ran a 19:35.52 to lead the way for the Rams while fellow freshman Imani Travis placed fifth with a 20:39.33. Qjuanda Rowe added a 13th place finish with a 22:59.01 while senior Rachel Bonham rounded out the top 20 finishers with a 24:16.37.
The Rams men's cross country team also competed at the meet. The Rams totaled 193 points to place eighth at the meet. Senior Cory Gerald led the way for the Rams with a 33:10.73 for a 29th place finish while fellow senior Julian Massey added a 34:05.65 to place 34th.
The Rams men's and women's cross country teams will return to action, Friday when the teams head to nearby Cary, N.C. to take part in the Adidas Cross Country Challenge hosted by North Carolina State University.
