CARY, NC - The Winston-Salem State University cross country teams are enjoying a fantastic start to the 2009 season and will look to keep things going Friday when the team takes part in the 2009 Wolfpack Invite in Cary, N.C. After a pair of great performances in the first two meets of the season, the Rams and Lady Rams will take the biggest stage of the early season when they compete against a talented field of teams, including the host North Carolina State Wolfpack.
The Rams' trio of freshman Andrew Chebii and sophomores Aaron Barnes and Desmond Wiggan have had some great efforts early this season as Chebii posted top three finishes in both of the team's first two races, including winning the 2009 Salem Invitational last Saturday. Barnes and Wiggan were close behind, taking third and fourth place respectively in the race. Friday's race will be a bit different, however, as the Rams will run in their first 5K race of the season.
Like the Rams, the Lady Rams will be led by a young core of runners who have also been impressive early this season. Freshman Tyrah Winfrey has led the way for the Lady Rams, finishing 10th at the UNC-Pembroke Invitational and winning the 2009 Salem Invitational last Saturday. Sophomore Ashley Lawson has also had a strong start to the season as well.
Friday's meet is scheduled to begin tomorrow afternoon as the men are scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start at the Wake Med Park while the women are scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. start.
