WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (5-5) staged a late rally to take a 5-4 seven-inning win over the Glenville State Pioneers (2-5), Saturday afternoon. After falling behind early, WSSU senior outfielder Brandon Ford hit a three-run home run that turned out to be the game-winner for the Rams.
As a team, the Rams had a solid overall effort in the game. The team totaled eight hits in the game with no fielding errors. Junior catcher Michael Murphy led the way for the Rams, going two-for-three at the plate with an RBI. Senior Brandon Ford was one-for-three with a three-run home run.
It was the Rams who struck first in the game, but the Pioneers answered and set the stage for the Rams; late rally. WSSU junior Rashad Stewart forced a Glenville State error to score freshman Jaxon Snider to begin in the third inning. The Rams added a fourth inning run as well when Murphy hit an RBI single to score senior center fielder Randy Norris and left the Rams on top, 2-0. Things got tougher for the Rams when Glenville State responded with four fifth inning runs and left the Rams trailing, 4-2. The Rams responded when Ford hit fifth inning three run homer to give the Rams a 5-4 lead that the team held on to win the game.
Freshman Tyrese Hearst (1-0) got the pitching win with 2.2 innings on the mound. He finished the game with no runs on no hits with three strikeouts. Senior Seth Reeves got the start and went 4.1 innings. He finished the game with four runs allowed (four earned) on eight hits with four strikeouts.
