WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- The Winston-Salem State Rams (7-2) look to stay hot, as they open CIAA play tonight, when they face the Panthers of Virginia Union University (1-5) at 6:00 P.M. at Barco-Stevens Hall on the Virginia Union campus.
WSSU will be looking for their seventh win in a row, and third consecutive over the Panthers. The Rams defeated VUU 67-66 at Winston-Salem a season ago, and followed that up with a 56-55 win in the first round of last season's CIAA Tournament, in which the Rams went on to win.
The Rams are being led in scoring by Justin Glover, who is averaging 13.6 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. Wakefield Ellison is adding 10.6 points and 3.9 rebounds per game off the bench for WSSU. Marcus Wells is chipping in 7.8 points, 3.4 rebounds and team high in assists (4.4) and steals (2.4) per game. WyKevin Bazemore is 7.6 points and a team high 7.4 rebounds per game.
The Rams have been getting solid performances from some talented newcomers, including Marquez jones (7.0 ppg)and freshman Michel-Ofik Nzege (5.3 points & 3.7 rebounds). Nzege has twice been selected as the CIAA Rookie of the Week.
Virginia Union is led in scoring by Damion Harris who is averaging 17.7 points and a team high 6.8 rebounds per game. Calvin Brown is averaging 8.7 points, while Juan Wilson is adding 8.2 points and 4.7 rebounds. Kimar Johnson is chipping in 7.5 points and 6.8 rebounds per outing.
This will be the WSSU Rams last game before the Christmas holiday. The Rams will return to action on January 5th, when they travel to Lincoln (Pa) and to Bowie State on January 7th, 2013.
