WSSU Rams Bury Chowan Hawks, 55-24; Move to 3-0

Kameron Smith passes for 355 yards and a career high 6 touchdowns versus Chowan MURFREESBORO, NC - Kameron Smith passed for 355 yards and a career high six touchdowns, and the Rams accumulated 619 yards of total offense as Winston-Salem State University rolled to a 55-24 win over the Chowan University Hawks.

With the win, Winston-Salem State runs its record to 3-0 overall, 2-0 in the CIAA. Chowan falls for 1-2 overall, 0-1 in the CIAA.

It didn't take long for the WSSU Rams to get on the scoreboard as Kameron Smith hit Cedric hickman for a 5 yard pass to put the Rams up 7-0, three minutes and eight seconds into the game.

After a series of punts from both teams, WSSU's Nicholas Cooper would find the endzone after taking a Smith screen pass and racing 29 yards to the endzone to give WSSU a 14-0 lead.

Jamie DeGeare would enter the game for a series and guided the Rams down the field and eventually hitting Tehvyn Brantley for a 20 yard pass and catch for another Rams score.

Chowan would finally get on the scoreboard when Cameron Stover hit Robert Holland for a 51 yard pass, catch and run for the Hawks.

But the Rams would come right back down the field and Kameron Smith would find tight end Michael Byrd for another Rams score, and Smith's third TD pass of the night.

After a Chowan field goal by Ryan Murphy, WSSU would once again strike quickly, this time Kameron Smith would find Juhuann Butler down the right side of the Hawks defense for an 85 yard scoring strike with 3:46 left in the first half.

The secondhalf would be more of the same, as in the third quarter, Kameron Smith would hook up with Patrick Terry for a 6 yard touchdown pass, and with Darryl Freeney for a 46 yard touchdown pass to boost the Ram lead to 48-10 heading into the final period.

Chowan would score twice in the final stanza, but not before backup quarterback, Jamie DeGeare, would hook up with Maurice Lewis on a screen pass, and Lewis would break several tackles and outrun the CU defense for a 70 yard score.

Offensively, WSSU's Nicholas Cooper rushed for 98 yards on 13 carries to lead the Rams rushing attack.

11 different Rams caught passes on the night, led by Tehvyn Brantley's five catches for 55 yards and one score. Jamal Williams had three catches for 43 yards; Dominique Fitzgerald finished with two catches for 62 yards; Nicholas Cooper had two catches for 29 yards and a score; Patrick Terry finished with two receptions for 27 yards and a touchdown; Jahuann Butler had one catch for an 85 yard score; Maurice Lewis had one catch for a 70 yard score; Darryl Freeney had one catch for a 46 yard touchdown; Michael Byrd had one catch for a 23 yard touchdown; Cedric Hickman finished with one catch for a five yard score, and Riucky Rozier had one catch for two yards.

Defensively, Carlos Fields had nine tackles, one sack and one and half tackles for a loss to lead WSSU. Alton Keaton finished with eight tackles and one tackle for loss yards. Khendra Reid finished with five tackles and a pass breakup. Defensive tackles Barry Tripp finished with four tackles and defensive end, Akeem Ward, who was doubtful for the game after missing most of last week's practices with a sore neck, finished with three tackles.

Freshman Alejandro Suarez, was five for five on PAT attempts in his first action as a collegiate football player.

The WSSU Rams will host the Fayetteville State Broncos, next Saturday, in their 2011 home debut at 6:00 P.M. at Bowman Gray Stadium.
