Maynor Named Regional Coach; Nine Rams Honored

BROOKFIELD, Ill. — The Don Hansen Football Committee has released the 2012 Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-Super Region One squad today (Jan. 8).

2012 Harlon Hill Trophy winner Zach Zulli of Shippensburg was named the Super Region One "Offensive Player of the Year", while California safety Rontez Miles was selected as the Super Region One "Defensive Player of the Year." St. Augustine return specialist Tyron Laughinghouse garnered "Special Teams Player of the Year", while Winston-Salem State head coach Connell Maynor was named the Super Region One Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.

Zulli, a junior, quarterback, completed 342 of 544 passes for 4,747 yards and 54 td's in 13 games, leading Shippensburg to the PSAC-East title, an 11-2 overall record and a 1-1 record in the NCAA D-II Playoffs. He led Division II in passing yards and touchdown passes.

Miles, a senior, led the California defense posting 75 tackles, 4 interceptions, 6 passes defensed, 2 break-ups, 3tfl's and 2 qb sacks. He is the most decorated defensive player in California history.

Laughinghouse, also a senior, led the nation in kickoff returns with 14 kickoffs for 562 yards and 3 td's – an average of 40.14 yards per kickoff return. He also averaged 15.33 yards per punt return in 2012.

Maynor led Winston Salem State to the NCAA Division II Championship game before the Rams lost in the title tilt to Valdosta State. Maynor led WSSU to a 14-1 overall record in 2012, and combined with his 13-1 slate a year ago, has an amazing record of 27-2 in the last two years.

The Don Hansen team carries out the legacy of long-time small college football advocate Don Hansen, who passed away at age 75 on Aug. 29, 2010. Hansen, from Brookfield, Ill., started and published Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette for three decades, selecting NCAA Division II All-America teams for the first time in 1988. Don Hansen's Football Gazette began selecting Division II All-Region squads in 2003.

The first-team and second-team All-Region selections advance to a national ballot from which the 2012 Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-America team will be named later this month.

Shippensburg and IUP placed five players on the first team, with Bloomsburg getting three. Eighteen teams had players on the first team.

Bloomsburg led the overall squad with 11 players selected, while IUP had 10, Shippensburg and Winston Salem had 9 each, with California garnering 8 and New Haven and Charleston getting 7 each.

Super Region 1 is compiled of universities from four conferences including the PSAC, WVIAC, NE10 and the CIAA. A total of 38 teams and 129 players are represented on this team.
