Sept. 13, 2010
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA- The good news keeps coming for the Winston-Salem State Rams as the team accounted for five of the nine weekly Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) football honors for the week ending September 12, 2010. After picking up a clutch 34-27 win over the North Carolina Central Eagles, Saturday, the Rams earned four player of the week honors as well as taking Coach of the Week.
For the second week in a row a WSSU student-athlete was named the CIAA Rookie of the Week as freshman wide receiver Tehvyn Brantley not only took home Rookie of the Week honors as well as being named the CIAA Receiver of the Week. Brantley caught six passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns, including the 31-yard game winner.
Though Brantley took home a pair of honors, he was hardly alone as senior Alton Keaton was named the CIAA Linebacker of the Week after recording 11 tackles (three solo) with a forced fumble and a pass breakup. Sophomore quarterback Kameron Smith was named the CIAA Offensive Back of the Week after completing 18-of-29 passes for 419 yards and five touchdowns. He also added 10 carries for 39 yards.
The three student-athletes weren't the only ones taking home honors as WSSU head coach Connell Maynor was named the CIAA Coach of the Week. He led the Rams to their third win of the season and the team's first 3-0 start since 1991. Through the first three games of the season, Maynor has led the Rams to more points than in all of the 2009 season.
After playing a pair of non-conference NCAA Division I opponents, the Rams will return to action against the Chowan Hawks, Saturday at the Bowman-Gray Stadium. For more information on Rams football, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2909 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
