Sept. 20, 2005
Hampton, VA - Winston-Salem State University football players Martin Hicks (Sr./Oxford, NC) and Matt Hind (Jr./Clemmons, NC) were honored this past Monday as two of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association's weekly football players of the week for their performances in WSSU's 24-23 win over Elizabeth City State University on Saturday evening.
Hicks, a senior running back from Oxford, NC is coming off of a stellar week on the offensive side of the ball as the two-time CIAA rushing leader (2003 and 2004) awoke from his offensive slumber en route to recording 155 yards on 15 carries (10.3 yards per carry) as he tallied two touchdowns in the Rams' win over Elizabeth City State. Hicks' longest carry of the evening was a 60-yard touchdown that came in the first quarter. The three-time All-CIAA selection turned in his first 100-yard game the season as he looks to capture his third consecutive conference rushing title in 2005. For his efforts, he was named the CIAA's Offensive Back of the Week.
Hind, a junior placekicker from Clemmons, NC earned weekly conference honors for his performance versus the Vikings as he provided the Rams with the win on Saturday following his game-winning 20-yard field goal as time expired to lift WSSU to the 24-23 victory. In addition to Hind's perfect field goal that won the game, he was a perfect three-for-three kicking extra points in the contest. For his efforts, Hind was named the CIAA's Specialty Teams Player of the Week.
Hicks and Hind's selection marks the first time a WSSU student-athlete has garnered weekly conference honors thus far in the 2005 season.
