WSSU Football Places Two On CIAA All-Rookie Team

Nov. 1, 2005

Hampton, VA - Winston-Salem State University newcomers Joseph Blanks (Erie, PA) and Michael Helton (Dalzell, SC) were named to the CIAA All-Rookie Team as announced by the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association on Tuesday afternoon.

Helton, a 6'5", 300 pound freshman from Dalzell, SC started every game for the Rams at the center position.  He was the anchor in front of WSSU quarterback Monte Purvis and helped the Rams to a 6-4 record and a second-place finish in the CIAA Western Division.  The Rams narrowly missed seeing a pair of running backs run for 1,000 yards as CIAA Offensive Player of the Year Martin Hicks and second-team All-CIAA running back Jed Bines nearly eclipsed the 1,000 yard mark for the second straight year.  For his efforts, Helton has been selected to the All-Rookie team.

Joining Helton was right tackle Joseph Blanks.  Blanks, a 6'5", 320 pound true freshman from Erie, PA was by far the most impressive newcomer for the Rams and one of the most impressive freshman in the CIAA.  Blanks helped to lead WSSU to 2,158 net yards rushing and a second-place finish in the CIAA in total offense.  The nephew of Tae-Bo founder Billy Blanks, Joseph is a physical force that turned down scholarship offers at several Division I schools, including the University of Nebraska, to attend WSSU.  He became only the second true freshman since 1973 to appear in every game for WSSU as he started all 10.  For his efforts, he has been selected to the CIAA All-Rookie Team.
