WSSU Announces It Will Not Renew Gregory Richardson's Contract

Nov. 2, 2004

Winston-Salem, NC - Dr. Chico Caldwell, Winston-Salem State University Director of Athletics announced on Tuesday morning that the University has decided not to renew the contract of football defensive coordinator Gregory Richardson.

Following a season in which the Rams were ranked tenth in total defense (last in pass defense and eighth in run defense) and posted a 4-6 record overall, the Athletic Department was prompted to make a defensive personnel change.

Dr. Chico Caldwell, WSSU Director of Athletics, commented on the decision with the following statement:

"Consistent with what we do in the off-season, I meet with each of our head coaches and evaluate the season and personnel. We sit down and examine statistics as well as look at where we are as a team, and after looking at this football season, and how we fared, primarily from a defensive standpoint, it was obvious that we needed to make a change on the defensive side of the ball.

I met with Head Coach Kermit Blount and following our conversation and analysis, he met with Coach Richardson and informed him of the decision to make this necessary change.

Coach Blount and I will continue to evaluate our football program over the next couple of weeks and we will do our very best to make sure that all the issues are addressed so that we can continue to improve the overall performance of our football team."

Coach Richardson, who has been a part of the WSSU football staff for three seasons will finish out the remainder of his current contract before pursuing employment opportunities elsewhere.
