WSSU Will Not Renew The Contracts Of Lamont Turner And James Braswell

Nov. 9, 2004

Winston-Salem, NC - WSSU Head Football Coach Kermit Blount announced on Wednesday afternoon that he has decided not to renew the contracts of football coaching staff members Lamont Turner and James Braswell.

Following a season in which the Rams were ranked tenth in total defense (last in pass defense and eighth in run defense) and posted a 4-6 record overall, Coach Blount, following extensive meetings with WSSU Director of Athletics, Dr. Chico Caldwell said that the football program was prompted to make personnel changes.

The University released Defensive Coordinator Gregory Richardson last week and Dr. Chico Caldwell, WSSU Director of Athletics issued the following statement following that announcement:

"Consistent with what we do in the off-season, I meet with each of our head coaches and evaluate the season and personnel. We sit down and examine statistics as well as look at where we are as a team, and after looking at this football season, and how we fared, it was obvious that we needed to make some changes in our personnel.

I met with Head Coach Kermit Blount and following our conversation and analysis, he met with both Coach Richardson and Coach Turner and informed them of the decision to decline the option on their contracts.

This kind of decision is always difficult but we felt that we owed both of these individuals the opportunity to secure alternate employment, and therefore did not want to prolong this decision."

Both James Braswell and Lamont Turner will finish out the remainder of their current contracts (terminating December 31st, 2004) before pursuing employment opportunities elsewhere.
