WSSU Department Of Athletics Releases 2007 Football Schedule

Dec. 5, 2006

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Winston-Salem State University Director of Athletics, Dr. Chico Caldwell released the 2007 Ram football schedule on Tuesday morning with the highlight of the 11-game slate being the "Circle City Classic" to take place at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The Rams will play a full compliment of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference games with only two non-conference opponents gracing the schedule in national powerhouse Coastal Carolina (September 8, 2007) and longtime rival North Carolina Central University (November 10, 2007).

WSSU, who will enter into their third year of a five-year transition to the NCAA Division I level in the fall of 2007, will play nine MEAC contests highlighted by home games against North Carolina A&T, Hampton University, and Delaware State University.

The Rams will also face Florida A&M in a game that will be designated as a WSSU home game in the RCA Dome, home of the National Football League's Indianapolis Colts, in what has been tabbed as the "Circle City Classic" on October 6, 2007.  The contest will see the two rivals who played a nail-biter in Tallahassee, FL in 2006, square off against one another in one of the largest Historically Black College and University football classics in the nation.

Head coach Kermit Blount and the Rams will face the Hornets of Delaware State University for Homecoming 2007 on November 3, 2007 at 2:00 pm in Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, NC as they look to knock off another MEAC foe in what has traditionally been the biggest home game of the season.

Ram fans will benefit from five road games that will be played within easy driving distance from Winston-Salem, NC as WSSU will face Coastal Carolina in Conway, SC; Morgan State University in Baltimore, MD; South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, SC; Howard University in Washington, DC; and Norfolk State University in Norfolk, Virginia during the 2007 season.

The longest road trip of the season will come on October 20, 2007 as the Rams travel to Daytona Beach, Florida to face the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman College.

"We are more than pleased to release the football schedule for the 2007 season. We sincerely wanted to have homecoming on October 13, however, there seemed to be no teams available on that date.  As well, we had concerns regarding the dates for fall break and did not want to schedule a game that our student body would have a conflict attending.  I have been involved in negotiations to schedule WSSU for a major HBCU football classic for several months now and I am very pleased to announce that negotiations are complete, the contract is in, and WSSU has accepted an offer to compete in the Circle City Classic in Indianapolis, IN at the RCA Dome on October 6 against Florida A&M University. This is a great opportunity for more exposure for our programs at Winston-Salem State University. Being involved in one of the top football classics this early in our Division I reclassification speaks volumes about the progress Winston-Salem State University is making in advancing its image and reputation on both the national and international level" WSSU Director of Athletics, Dr. Chico Caldwell said in interviews on Tuesday.
