ETTRICK, VA – The Winston-Salem State Rams (8-9) opened their defense of their Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) championship with a bang when the team took a dominating 5-0 win over the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls in the quarterfinal rounds of the tournament.
The Rams got things started in doubles play when the duo of Creighton Jones and Jonathan Aubrey took an 8-1 win at #1 doubles. The tandem of Christopher Shew and Christopher Jeter kept things going with an 8-4 win at #3 doubles. The duo of Corey Bonnette and Joshua Aubrey rounded out doubles play when they took an 8-5 win at #2 doubles.
In singles play, the Rams needed just two points and Bonnette and Shew finished the match when they took 6-0, 6-0 wins at #4 and #6 singles respectively.
With the win, the Rams improve to 8-9 overall and the team will head to the semifinal round of the tournament to take on the Chowan Hawks in a rematch of last season's CIAA championship finals.
