Lady Rams Defeat Livingstone in Heated 75-63 Game

Wells, Scott combine for 30 points in hard-fought victory

SALISBURY, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (14-12, 9-7 CIAA) ended the regular season in style with a hard-fought 75-63 victory over the Livingstone Lady Blue Bears (8-17, 4-12 CIAA). The Lady Rams took the win behind a great effort as they had to dig deep to fend off a scrappy Livingstone team that battled for all 40 minutes of the game.

The Lady Rams took the win behind a great overall effort that included shooting a strong 46.3% from the field while holding the Lady Bears to shooting just 35.0% from the floor. Four Winston-Salem State players reached double-digit scoring in the game. WSSU junior guard Taylar Wells led the team to the victory with a team-high 16 points in the game while sophomore forward Dionna Scott added 14 points. Sophomore guard Tareka Cesar added 12 points while fellow sophomore McKenzie Weston added 11 points as well. Sophomore forward Jovonah Graham led the WSSU rebounding effort with a team-high seven rebounds as well.

The battle began early with both teams struggling to score early, but the Lady Rams soon fixed that problem with a 7-0 run to get things going. The Lady Blue Bears would go on to get things going as well as they cut the WSSU lead to just one point with a 6-0 run of their own. From there, the two teams continued to battle with the Lady Rams staying on top. The Lady Rams gained control of the contest midway through the half when the team went on a 16-4 run that gave WSSU a 28-12 lead with 6:03

The Lady Rams would go on to push their lead to 12 points when a Wells three-pointer left the Lady Rams on top 28-12 with 6:03 left in the first half. From there, the Lady Rams found themselves holding off a late rally by the Lady Blue Bears with WSSU taking a 34-24 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The second half began in the same way with the Lady Rams jumping out early. The Lady Rams opened the game with an 11-4 run that left the team on top, 45-28 with 13:58 left to play. From there, the Lady Rams once again found themselves holding off the Lady Blue Bears as the WSSU lead was chipped down to seven points, 63-56 with 2:41 left to play. Still, the Lady Rams would not relent as WSSU connected on 10 free throws in the final two minutes of the game to finish the evening with the 12-point victory.

With the win, the Lady Rams finish the regular season with a 14-12 overall record and clinch a third straight winning season. The team has also improved to 5-5 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division and claimed third place in the division. With the regular season ended, the Lady Rams will prepare for upcoming CIAA Tournament. Official seedings and game times will be announced by the CIAA tomorrow.
