Lady Rams Hold Off Morgan State for 5-3 Win

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (4-7) held on late for a 5-3 win over the Morgan State Lady Bears (0-4), Friday afternoon. With the win, the Lady Rams completed the doubleheader sweep over their NCAA Division I opponents and scored their third straight victory.

The Lady Rams broke the bats and the defense to secure the win with some big plays in clutch moments. As a team, the Lady Rams totaled eight hits in the game with junior designated player/outfielder Andreya O'Brien leading the way. For the game, she went two-for-three from the plate with two runs scored. Junior shortstop Tanaya Pettus also went two-for-three with a run scored and two RBI.

Morgan State struck first in the game with a pair of second inning runs, but the Lady Rams soon responded with a second inning run of their own. Sophomore outfielder Mariha Freeman hit a RBI sacrifice bunt that scored O'Brien to cut the WSSU deficit down to just one run, 2-1. The Lady Rams would tie the game in the third inning when sophomore second base Monet Daly hit an RBI ground out to the pitcher that scored senior outfielder Brittany Lane. The team broke out in the fourth inning when the Lady Rams scored three runs. Two runs came on a two-RBI double by Pettus, which was followed by an RBI single by senior outfielder Shantel Haskins that drove in Pettus.

After taking the 5-2 lead, the Lady Rams clamped down on defense and allowed just one Morgan State run in the final three innings of the game. The defensive effort including stopping a steal at home as well as a key play from Lane to Lynch at home in the sixth inning.

WSSU junior pitcher Yasmin Lee (2-3) secured the pitching win. Lee allowed four hits with three strikeouts and just one walk allowed. Senior pitcher Brittany Lane came into the game for three innings of work and finished the game with three strikeouts.

With the win, the Lady Rams improve to 4-7 and secured their third straight win. The team will look to keep its momentum going when they host the Virginia State Lady Trojans in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Cluster. The game will be a big one as it is a rematch of last season's conference championship game.
