Lane Records 500th Career Strikeout in 7-0 Win Over Morgan State

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (3-7) turned on the defense to score their first home win of the season when the team took a 7-0 win over the Morgan State Lady Bears (0-3), Friday afternoon at  Washington Park. The team did it in historic fashion as senior pitcher Brittany Lane recorded her 500th career strikeout for the Lady Rams.

The Lady Rams took the win behind a stellar defensive performance as the team held the Lady Bears scoreless for all seven innings. The team was also strong at the plate with 12 hits in the game as well. WSSU sophomore catcher Bria Jones led the way, going three-for-three from the plate with a walk and an RBI. Senior outfielder Shantel Haskins also had a great day at the plate, going three-for-three as well with three runs scored.

After putting up just one run in the first four innings of play, the Lady Rams broke out late for six runs in the final two innings of the game. The Lady Rams got things started in the third inning when sophomore utility Monet Daly hit an RBI triple to put WSSU ahead 1-0. Things heated up in the fifth inning when senior infielder Nikki Lynch drove in Haskins on an RBI fielder's choice. After Daly scored on a passed ball, senior infielder Britney Cato hit an RBI single that scored Lynch.

The Lady Rams broke out once again in the sixth inning when junior infielder Tanaya Pettus hit an RBI double to center field, followed by an RBI sacrifice fly by Daly. Sophomore catcher Bria Jones closed out the WSSU scoring with an RBI single that scored Haskins.

WSSU senior pitcher Brittany Lane (2-4) picked up the pitching win, going all seven innings and allowing just two hits in the game. She also added six strikeouts, including her 500th career strikeout in the second inning.

The Lady Rams will return to action tomorrow when the team plays host to the 2013 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Cluster. The Lady Rams will begin play by facing the Virginia State Lady Trojans in a rematch of last season's conference championship game.
