WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (24-14, 13-0 CIAA) turned on the defense to take a 10-2 win over the Saint Augustine's Lady Falcons (14-9, 10-4 CIAA), Saturday afternoon. After jumping out to an early lead, the Lady Rams turned on their defensive efforts to seal a 10-2 five-inning win over the Lady Falcons.
The Lady Rams took the win behind a great offensive effort with 10 hits in the game. Sophomore outfielder Mariha Freeman led the way for the team with a two-for-three effort at the plate with two runs scored and three RBI in the game. Senior infielder Nikki Lynch added two hits in three at-bats with two runs scored and an RBI as well.
The Lady Rams had to play some tough defense to hold Saint Augustine's to just two runs in spite of eight hits. WSSU junior pitcher Yasmin Lee (8-6) took the pitching win with five innings of action with eight hits allowed and two runs allowed (one earned). She also recorded five strikeouts in the game.
WSSU jumped out early in the game with five first inning runs. After scoring on a passed ball to open the inning, the Lady Rams stole home for the next run. Freeman added to the score with a two-RBI double, which was followed by an RBI single by senior infielder Britney Cato that scored Freeman. After allowing a second-inning SAU run, the Lady Rams added three more second inning runs with Lynch hit an RBI single, followed by an RBI double by junior infielder Tanaya Pettus. Junior outfielder Andreya O'Brien added another score with an RBI single to left field.
The Lady Rams sealed their scoring in the fourth inning with a Freeman RBI single, which was followed by an RBI sacrifice fly by senior outfielder Shantel Haskins that scored Freeman. The Falcons made an effort at a rally with a fifth-inning home run, but the Lady Rams clamped down on defense to seal the win.
