PEMBROKE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (0-5) saw a strong early effort fall short in a 5-2 loss to the Concord Mountain Lions (4-5), Sunday morning at the UNC-Pembroke Invitational Tournament. After taking an early two-run lead in the opening three innings, the Lady Rams were outscored 5-0 over the remaining four innings of the game.
The Lady Rams took the loss in spite of a solid overall batting effort with seven total hits in the game while allowing just eight hits to the Mountain Lions. Sophomore second baseman Chyna Riley led the WSSU batting effort with a three-for-four performance at the plate with a run scored and an RBI. Sophomore pitcher Mercedes Hargett added a two-for-four performance at the plate. Freshman outfielder Anna Marino added a run scored with a stolen base.
The Lady Rams scored both runs in the third inning when Riley hit an RBI single that scored Marino. She was able to cross the plate herself when senior shortstop Monet Daly reached base on a Concord fielding error that allowed Riley to score. After the inning, the Lady Rams allowed four fourth inning runs and a fifth inning run to take the 5-2 loss.
Hargett (0-2) took the pitching loss for the Lady Rams after going four and one thirds innings. She allowed five runs (three earned), but added four strikeouts. Riley pitched one and two thirds innings and finished the game with two hits allowed and two strikeouts.
