WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (28-10, 16-2 CIAA) closed their home season in a big way when the team took a 9-0 win over the Saint Augustine's Falcons (5-19, 5-13 CIAA), Thursday afternoon. The Rams sent their seniors out in style when the team took a shutout victory on Senior Day.
The Rams put on a show both at the plate and in the field. The Rams totaled nine hits in the game. WSSU senior Destiny Snipes stole the show when she went three-for-three with three runs scored and two RBI. Junior second base Daijah Chambers went two for three with two runs scored and two RBI.
Winston-Salem State scored early and often to claim the win. The Rams got things started in the first inning when the team scored a pair of runs. Senior designated player Erica Davis hit an RBI single to break the scoring seal. The team added another run when redshirt-freshman Jasmine McCain drew a bases-loaded walk to leave the team up, 2-0. The Rams added a second inning run when Davis hit an RBI double. Freshman Alleigh Himes added an RBI sacrifice groundout as well to leave the team up, 4-0 after the second inning. The Rams took two more runs in the third inning when McCain scored on a passed ball and Chambers added an RBI single. The team added its third and fourth runs of the inning when Snipes hit a two-run home run to seal the win.
WSSU sophomore Tia Robinson (14-3) took the win behind a dominating pitching performance. She threw all five innings of the game and held the Falcons to just one hit and no runs. She also added six strikeouts.
With the win, the Rams close the regular season with a 28-10 run and a 16-2 record in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play. The team will now turn its attention to the post-season when they take part in the 2019 CIAA Softball Championship Tournament.
