Six Rams Named to 2019 All-CIAA Softball Team

 

CHARLOTTE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams softball team will need to make room on their trophy cases as the team had six players to earn Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) All-Conference honors. There were also a pair of Rams who earned spots on the CIAA All-Rookie Team as well.

After dominating the 2019 regular season, the Rams earned four first team All-CIAA honors and two second team All-CIAA honors. Leading the way for the Rams was junior designated player Erica Davis who was a first team selection at the designated player position. She finished the regular season leading the team with a .474 batting average. Also joining Davis earning first team All-CIAA honors was junior second base Daijah Chambers. She was the Rams' leader in RBI with 41 RBI. Junior outfielder Shauntaja Dedecker, who leads the Rams with 10 home runs and senior outfielder Destiny Snipes, who has a .426 batting average as well.

In addition to the quartet of Rams to earn first team All-CIAA honors, the Rams also had a pair of players selected to the CIAA Second Team All-Conference team. Sophomore Tia Robinson earned second team All-CIAA honors at the pitcher position. She totaled a 14-3 pitching record with 60 strikeouts. Also earning second team All-CIAA honors was sophomore outfielder Nyla Howard. She finished the regular season with a .242 batting average with 22 runs scored.

The conference honors didn't stop at the upper classmen as a pair of WSSU freshmen were named to the 2019 CIAA All-Rookie team. Freshman third base Alleigh Himes totaled a .379 batting average with four home runs and 24 RBI. Fellow freshman Aniyah Jones at the first base position. She finished the regular season with eight home runs to rank third on the team.

With the 2019 regular season complete, the team will turn its attention to the post season and the 2019 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Softball Championship Tournament. The Rams will enter the tournament as the second seed from the CIAA Southern Division. The team will take on the Elizabeth City State Vikings, the #3 seed from the CIAA Northern Division.
