WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (9-6, 8-3 CIAA) got their biggest win of the season, Wednesday, when the team took a 4-3 upset win over the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls (11-10, 8-1 CIAA). The Rams handed the Golden Bulls their first Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) loss of the season.
The Rams got the day started in style with wins at #2 and #3 doubles. Freshman Kyra Akande and sophomore Cylah Gaither combined for a 6-3 win at #3 doubles and junior Tay;lor Champion and junior Avion Harris held on for a 7-6 win at #2 doubles.
The team kept their momentum going into singles play. Freshman Kyrsten Jennelle got things started with a 6-0, 6-0 win at #5 singles while Gaither took a 6-1, 1-6, and 10-3. The match was sealed when junior Avion Harris took a 6-4, 6-1 win at #3 singles.
With the win, the Rams improve to 9-6 overall and 8-3 in CIAA play. The Rams will return to action, Tuesday, when the team closes out the regular season at Meredith.
