NEW ORLEANS, LA – After some great performances on the track during the 2019 indoor track & field season, the Winston-Salem State Rams brought home some great honors as four members of the team were selected to the United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Region team, Tuesday.
The team was especially impressive as the four honorees came from the Rams' sprint events. Junior sprinter Ma'Kyia Gayden led the way as the region's top performer in the women's 60m dash. She ran a season-best 7.47 in the women's 60m dash at the USC Indoor Open and for her efforts, she was selected for participation in the 2019 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championships. Also joining her was sophomore sprinter Victoria Porter, who was among the top runners in the nation in the women's 400m dash. She ran a season-best 55.16 in the women's 400m dash as the 2018 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Indoor Track & Field Championships. Also earning a spot on the all-region team was junior Cierra Thompson who was selected in the women's 60m dash. She has the second-best time in the region with a 7.67. Sophomore Azari'El Wilson earned a spot on the all-region team in the women's 60m hurdles where she has the fourth best time in the region at 8.91. She ran that time at the 2019 CIAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Gayden and Porter will take their next action on to the national level as they will compete in the 2019 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championship Meet. The rest of the Rams will turn their attentions to the outdoor season when they open the outdoor track & field season at the VertKlasse Meeting Hosted by High Point University, Friday, March 22nd and Saturday, March 23rd.
