Lady Rams Battle in Hard-Fought Three-Set Loss to Queens (NC)

MISENHEIMER, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (0-6) took a hard fought three-set loss to the Queens (NC) Royals (2-4) in their second match of the 2012 Pfeiffer Invitational. The team gave a great effort in the match and posted one of the best performances of the early season in the heartbreaking loss.

As a team, the Lady Rams battled through adversity to finish the match with 24 kills, but 22 hitting errors.  WSSU junior middle blocker De Ann Smith had the best effort of the match with a team-high seven kills for the Lady Rams. She also added two block assists. Junior hitter Katelyn Sigala added six kills of her own. Junior utility Avoni Seymour stepped up for the Lady Rams at the libero position where she recorded 11 digs in the match.

The match got off to a slow start for the Lady Rams as they struggled throughout the first set. The team managed just five kills while totaling eight hitting errors in the opening set and took the 25-13 loss. Things we also tough for the Lady Rams early in the second set, but the team made a surge midway through the set pulling to within one point of the Royals, 12-11 after falling into an early deficit. Though the team challenged, the Royals matched the WSSU effort with a run of their own to pull away late and finished the 25-17 win in the set. For the set, the Lady Rams had an -.016%.

The third set of the match turned out to be a nail-biter as neither team was willing to back down in the close set. In a dramatic turn, it was the Lady Rams who built the early lead and forced their opponents to their heels in the set. However, in the end, it was a late Queens (NC) rally that sealed the Lady Rams' loss. WSSU came jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the set and maintained the lead midway through the set, 14-12. After holding off the Royals 23-20, the Lady Rams soon found themselves tied 24-24. After picking up one point, the Lady Rams allowed back-to-back scores to end the match, 27-25.
