Lady Rams Battle Hard in Three-Set Loss to Lenoir-Rhyne

MISENHEIMER, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (0-8) closed out the 2012 Pfeiffer Invitational on a down note with a three-set loss to the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears (2-3), Saturday afternoon. Though the Lady Rams gave it their all, the team found it tough stopping the powerful offensive attack of the Bears. The Lady Rams were impressive at times during the match, showing a lot of heart and battling through adversity at every turn. As a team, the Lady Rams finished the match with 22 kills, but were saddled by 21 hitting errors. The WSSU defense was put to the test in the match against a Bears offense that recorded 41 kills with 10 service aces in the match. The Lady Rams also boasted a strong serve game of their own with nine service aces. WSSU junior outside hitter Katelyn Sigala led the way for the Lady Rams with a team-high seven kills in the match. Senior middle blocker De Ann Smith had a strong day with a solo block and three block assists while sophomore hitter Chelsea Violenes and senior right side Francesca Edgerton added four block assists of their own. The Lady Rams opened the match with a strong start in the opening set, trailing the Bears 13-10 near the midpoint of the match. After a pair of miscues, the Lady Rams would keep the set within reach, 15-11, but could never cut into their deficit and a late 10-3 run by the Bears would seal the opening set loss, 25-14. The WSSU struggles continued early in the second set and though the Lady Rams would fall into several deficits, the team battled back every time, but could not get over the hump, finishing the set with the 25-15 loss in the set. In the third set, the Lady Rams were able to take advantage of some Bears miscues to take an 11-10 lead in the set. The Lady Rams would push their lead to two points 13-11 before the Bears tied the set, 15-15. From there, Lenoir-Rhyne would mount a last push to jump ahead 24-21, but the Lady Rams would not give in easily, pushing the set to a 24-23 score before the Lady Rams would tie the set 24-24. The set would go into several extra points with leads and ties on both sides before Lenoir-Rhyne finally closed out the 30-28 set win. The Lady Rams will return to action, Monday evening when the team heads to Fayetteville, North Carolina to take on the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos, the defending Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division Champions.
