Lady Rams Battle Hard in Five-Set Loss to Fayetteville State

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (5-16, 5-7 CIAA) gave it their all, but the team could not get the job done in a thrilling five-set loss to the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos (15-3, 12-0 CIAA), Thursday evening. The Lady Rams and Lady Broncos battled hard into the final points of nearly every set in the classic match, but in the end, the Lady Rams took the loss, 23-25, 25-21, 14-25, 27-25, and 13-15.

The Lady Rams had a great offensive effort in the match with 51 total kills and only 22 attack errors. WSSU junior hitter Avoni Seymour led the way for the Lady Rams with a double-double 13 kills and 10 digs in the match. Junior hitter Katelyn Sigala added nine kills with a team-high 12 digs. WSSU senior middle blocker De Ann Smith added seven total kills (three solo).

The match was a close one from the very beginning as the Lady Rams battled hard in a 25-23 opening set loss. The two teams played to a 20-20 tie following a pair of FSU errors. However, the Lady Rams added a pair of errors of their own to fall behind 20-22 and never got back into the set. In the second set, The Lady Rams turned the tables on the Lady Broncos, taking an 18-12 lead. Though FSU would work their way back into the set, the Lady Rams would not relent as they went on to take the 25-21 set win.

The Lady Broncos would bounce back in a big way with a 25-14 win in the third set. As a team, the Lady Rams managed just five kills in the set. In the fourth set, the Lady Rams stormed back to keep the match alive. The Lady Rams used a late surge to take a 24-21 lead. However, a pair of WSSU errors and an FSU kill tied the set 24-24. Though the Lady Broncos made an attempt to take the win, the Lady Rams would not relent as a Seymour kill ended the set.

In the final set, the Lady Rams fell behind early, trailing 7-11, but kept fighting. The Lady Rams pulled within one point, 13-14 on a kill by senior hitter Jazmine Wilson. However, the match ended with a Seymour attack error.

With the loss, the Lady Rams fall to 5-16 on the season and 5-7 in the CIAA with a 2-3 record in the CIAA Southern Division. The team will return to action, Saturday when the team hosts the Claflin Lady Panthers in a 5:00 p.m. match.
