CHARLOTTE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (1-9) gave some solid effort, but the team fell short in a three-set loss to the Georgia College Bobcats (3-4) on the second day of the Queens (N.C.) Invitational. The Rams had some bright spots, but in the end, the team fell short in the 25-10, 25-14, and 25-18 loss.
The Rams found the offense hard to come by in the tough loss. As a team, the Rams totaled 25 kills in the match with 19 attack errors. The trio of junior outside hitter Ytae Cobb, sophomore middle blocker Alexis Gregson-Hammond, and freshman Danyale Berry recorded five kills each in the match to lead the way for the Rams. Sophomore setter Brittany Carpenter had 14 assists to lead the team. Defensively, freshman Gabrielle Azar totaled 10 digs.
The first set was especially tough for the Rams who totaled 10 points in the set. Things looked good early with a 3-1 start to the set. However, the team was soon outscored 12-2 by the Bobcats and fell behind, 5-13. The team would stay within 12 points, 10-22, but allowed three straight Bobcat scores to end the opening set.
The second set saw an improved effort from the Rams; however, the team struggled to find their footing after a sluggish start. The Rams found themselves down, 3-13 in the early going, but found a nice groove later in the set. The team had a pair of three-point rallies, but in the end, the Rams could not quite get back into contention and took the 25-14 set loss.
The final saw the best effort from the Rams. The team once again opened the set with a strong start, taking a 4-1 lead over the Bobcats. However, the team fell victim to an 8-1 Bobcat run that left WSSU trailing, 5-9. The team would pull to within three points, 12-15 after a Carpenter service ace. However, the team would get no closer with Georgia College pulling away to seal the 25-18 set loss and the match loss.
With the loss, the Rams fall to 1-9 on the season. The team will return to action, Saturday when they open Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play against the Lincoln (Pa.) Lady Lions at the CIAA Volleyball Round Up. For more information on Rams volleyball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
